How Far is Pawleys Island from Raleigh

Raleigh, North Carolina, USA downtown skyline.

Pawleys Island lies roughly 190 miles out from Raleigh, with the drive taking around 4 hours without extended stops. The route starts off on I40 East towards Benson before moving onto I-95 South. Continue through Fayetteville and Lumberton before following SC-38 towards Johnsonville and Georgetown, before heading down US-17 North until you get to Pawleys Island. Alternatively, you can take the coastal route, which will put you on I-40 East toward Wilmington until you reach US-17, then continue as in the other route.

Places to Stop Along the Way

While the drive certainly isn’t easy, it is easy to break up with some fun stops along the way. Consider stopping in some of the following towns on your drive if you need to stretch your legs.

Fayetteville

About an hour out from Raleigh and right on the main route, this is a great spot to stop and grab a bite to eat in Downtown Fayetteville. When you’re done with some local bites, head over to the Airborne & Special Operations Museum. Established in 2000, the museum is considered the area’s premier tourist attraction, with a history ranging from the actions of 1940 paratroopers to exhibits centered on the warriors of tomorrow.

South of the Border

South of the Border, attraction on Interstate 95 (I-95) south of the border between North Carolina and South Carolina. Campy faux-Mexican style theme. Sombrero restaurant.

Stop by this popular roadside attraction that’s stood at the border for nearly 70 years! Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by the attraction’s mascot, Pedro, before arriving at the main rest area. South of the Border features an on-site motel, arcade, restaurant, and more! If you find yourself lost on the way, don’t worry, plenty of roadside billboards will let you know you’re on the right track.

Georgetown

Just before you get to Pawleys Island, take a stop in Georgetown for some of the best waterfront scenery around. Take the Harborwalk along the Sampit River and explore the area’s restaurants on Front Street for a quick bite to eat before your destination. Georgetown is about 15 minutes south of Pawleys Island, making it an easy stop before check-in.
